Hi Friends & Family!
We want to introduce to you our new blog we have created to help keep you updated on John's health. As many of you know, John loves to run and so we will be comparing his fight against cancer to a new kind of race God has called him to run. Therefore, the verse he will be claiming throughout this "Race" is Hebrews 12:1-2, "And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."
To bring you all up to speed on what has happened over the course of the last week... Last week John was hospitalized for a few days and as a result a CT scan revealed that he had multiple lesions in the liver and left adrenal gland along with multiple lymph nodes effected. Today, 1/27, they met with Dr. Viswanathan, Oncologist in Mansfield, to find out the result of the liver biopsy that had been taken last week along with the brain scan taken earlier this morning.
Dr. Viswanathan confirmed that John has Metastatic Malignant Melanoma. Traditionally chemo and radiation aren't effective for Melanoma so that really limits treatment options. And surgery is not an option. While there is no cure for this type of cancer, the Dr.'s recommendation is to control the melanoma with a Therapy called IL-2. The treatment they are referring John to is at the James Cancer Center. It's only recommended for a small percentage of melanoma patients who are ideal candidates for this therapy, so we are THANKFUL he is doing well enough to even be referred for this as a possible treatment. After seeing this specialist, we will continue to pray that God makes it clear whether or not this is the path for John to head.
A little about IL-2 Therapy: This treatment is known to be extremely intense and toxic. It involves being hospitalized for 5-7 days straight and then being sent home for 2-3 weeks, then back again to the hospital for 5-7 days and then home for another 2-3 weeks. Ideally, if his body can handle this treatment, they would do this cycle for up to 6 months. IL-2 is an immunotherapy rather than chemotherapy, response is not immediate; it takes time for the immune system to "kick in." The side effects can be hard on patients because the immune system is tricked into thinking that the patient has a severe, life-threatening infection. The consequence of tricking the body in this way is that it fires off the immune system in powerful ways to then fight the cancer.
4 BIG PRAISES:
1. The Dr. commented on how John's liver is still functioning well at this point.
2. John's brain scan came back clear with no cancer showing.
3. John is doing well enough to be referred for the IL-2 therapy as a potential option.
4. Those of you who know John will think this is funny - He won't lose his hair!
Lastly, we have felt showered with your love over this past week with phone calls, emails, texts, meals, cards, etc. THANK YOU so very much! We want you to know that we have received them and appreciate them all. We are overwhelmed at this point and still in a bit of shock with the news. DeletePraying for you and your family, John.
ReplyDeleteJohn has officiated many of my games throughout the years. I always have enjoyed talking to him before, during and after the games. I have watched my own father beat cancer not once, but twice and I know John will be able to come out on top. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this journey. It will be tough at times, but trust me you will come out of this a much stronger family than you already are. Hang in there John and I suppose I will bring my 7th grade Redmen to Shelby for the tournament knowing you might not be there. I fully expect you to be there next year though. As far as big praise #4 goes I have been jealous of your hair for years. God Bless you all in your time of need ~ Matt Miller, 7th grade basketball coach for the Bellevue Redmen.
ReplyDeleteJohn, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

I have been in the healthcare profession for many years and I have come to the realization that belief on yourself and the fact that you can overcome cancer is paramount in the defeat of the illness. I have seen family and friends face overwhelming odds against this terrible disease and resulted in full remission. I believe that faith in yourself and God will help you succeed in a full recovery.
ReplyDeleteJohn….wow, I just came across this today and it just about dropped me. I have too many friends who are battling this terrible disease. Here's wishing you all the best as you live your life…as Stuart Scott so eloquently said..you beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and by the manner in which you live! That's going the distance…to persevere…to finish the race you've been marked to run. So…prayers to you and your family as a new journey has began. Please know that they are many supporters out there…#GurneyPower.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless you John, and your family during this difficult time. John, you and your family will be in my prayers! A few years back I met you at a Crossroads 5k, it was my first. You inspired me and gave me pointers along the way and I have been running ever since. Thank you for taking the time for the encouraging words. There will be times in this battle that you will not be able to run, but God will carry you until your strength returns!!!! Stay strong, positive and faithful ,the Lord will never leave your or forsake you!!! .... :) Matiece Thomas
ReplyDeleteJohn...My youngest sister contacted me last night about this, and I was at a total loss. I have had the privilege as a player, a fan, and a coach to be in games with you. We have talked at games about families and basketball, and I cherish those discussions. You are one of the greats, that is in it for all the right reasons. I know you are a fighter and will battle this head on. We wanted to let you know that you are not alone, you have a great family and people in the area that are behind you during this time. You will be in our prayers daily throughout this entire battle. Stay positive and take "One Bite At A Time" during this fight.

I have been through troubling/ very depressing times that no one was sure would turn out ok. Though my problems (mental health) weren't of the same nature as yours, it did take a lot of time, strength & help from family, true friends & professionals to get through them. I still remember praying the St. Jude prayer, believing it would work, and seeing it come true. My dad Glennard & I have great respect for you. We've seen you make the right calls on the court, and I'm certain you make the right calls in your defeat of this!
ReplyDeleteJohn and Jill, your whole family has been added to the prayer chain at Shenandoah Christian Church.
ReplyDeleteLove and hugs

Is 41:10 "Do not fear for I am with you: do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you: I will help you: I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand." Rosemary Wilkinson
ReplyDeleteJohn, Jill and family, One of my favorite verses says "Let the beloved of the Lord (that's you) rest secure in Hi, for He shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves (that's you) rests between His shoulders (Deut. 33:12). I pray that you will feel so close to Him that you can hear His heartbeat. I am and will be praying for all of you.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Tommy Theisen (Tyson). I am the bailiff for Mark Heydinger. The short version is I was diagnosed with Metastatic Renal cell Carcinoma in may of 2013. That is also when the doctors gave me a 1% chance of living a year ish. I am a bailiff AND I have a gym that I lead cardio classes and Lifting groups. I also still teach martial arts. I am now the assistant pastor of 2 churches (which I wasn't at the beginning). Basically I am Blessed beyond belief and VERY healthy. I have several tumors that they are watching, but they can't explain why the said tumors have absolutely frozen for over a year now. Obviously we understand how powerful our God is even if the doctors don't acknowledge Him. If youre ever board you can listen to the 1st sermon that I did (which this was the topic) on youtube. "Tommy Theisen sermon 1". If you are ever interested in the over the counter suppliments and food that I take on a regular basis feel free to call me at 4195650244. I've done a boat load of research and I am not going anywhere anytime soon...... God's got a bunch of work for me to do still.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless, Tommy T
